Disposable cameras vs. a QR code gallery: what we tell couples
The film camera trend is genuinely fun. It's also not a photo strategy on its own. Here's how the two actually compare.
Disposable cameras are back on every table card inspiration board, and we get why. There’s something a phone just can’t do: nobody knows what’s on the roll until it comes back from the lab weeks later, grainy and a little overexposed, and that’s the whole charm of it.
We still think you need a QR code gallery running at the same time, for reasons that have nothing to do with nostalgia.
What the disposable camera actually gets you
A disposable camera forces a kind of patience nobody has anymore. Guests stop checking the shot on a screen and just take it. You get the candid, slightly-blurry, someone’s-thumb-is-in-frame photos that feel like they’re actually from 2026 and not staged for an Instagram grid. If you put three or four on the tables, people will use them, and the roll you get back will have moments you’d never have thought to ask for.
Where it falls apart
Here’s the part nobody puts on the inspiration board. A disposable camera holds 27 shots. At a 150-person wedding, that’s maybe one photo per table before the camera’s full, and once it’s full, someone has to notice, find you, and get a new one. Half the cameras we hear about go missing entirely: left on a table, taken home in someone’s purse, or just never turned in. The ones that do make it to developing take one to two weeks to come back, and if the lab messes up the scan or a camera got left in a hot car, that roll is gone. No backup, no second copy.
A QR code gallery doesn’t replace the fun of the disposable camera. It just doesn’t have any of those failure modes. Guests scan a code, upload straight from their phone, and it’s saved the moment it uploads. No film to lose, no two-week wait to find out half the shots are blurry ceiling photos.
The actual move
Most of the couples we talk to run both. Disposable cameras on the tables for the fun of it, and a QR code on the same table card for everything else: the toast nobody wants to retake, the group photo from the dance floor at 11pm, the video message from the one friend who couldn’t make it work on camera but recorded something on their phone instead.
When the disposable cameras come back from the lab, scan those in too if you want everything in one place. But don’t make the film camera your only system. You’ll get twenty-seven decent photos and miss the other four hundred your guests actually took.
